Kaum habe ich das erste Kapitel von „Queen’s Gambit“ von Elizabeth Fremantle verschlungen, war ich sofort mitten drin in einer Welt voller Intrigen, Leidenschaft und königlicher Machtspiele – und das ganz ohne trockene Geschichtsstunde. Die Geschichte schildert ein spannendes Stück Tudor-Zeit durch die Augen von Katherine Parr, der letzten Ehefrau von Henry VIII., und ihrer jungen Zofe Dot. Man spürt förmlich das Flackern der Kerzen in den düsteren Schlossfluren und die scharfen Blicke, die sich hinter höfischem Lächeln verbergen.
Katherine tritt nach ihrem zweiten Witwenstand äußerst vorsichtig wieder an den Hof zurück, halb misstrauisch, halb neugierig – und genau das macht sie sofort so greifbar und menschlich. Die Autorin schafft es mühelos, eine starke, kluge Frau zu zeichnen, die zwischen Liebe, Macht und Überleben ihren Weg finden muss. Und dann dieser Thomas Seymour – charismatisch, gefährlich und einfach eine Figur, die man entweder lieben oder hassen muss. Fremantles Schreibstil ist klar, lebendig und dabei elegant genug, um die historische Atmosphäre stimmig einzufangen, ohne schwülstig zu sein. Das erste Kapitel flutscht richtig runter, man will unbedingt weiterblättern.
Einziger kleiner Kritikpunkt: Für absolute Neueinsteiger in die Tudor-Geschichte könnte anfangs ein bisschen mehr Kontext hilfreich sein. Gerade wer schon mal Hilary Mantel oder Philippa Gregory gelesen hat, fühlt sich sofort zuhause, aber alle anderen könnten sich an den verschiedenen Figuren und politischen Konturen ein bisschen orientierungslos fühlen.
Für alle, die auf historische Romane mit starken Frauenfiguren, politischen Intrigen und einem Hauch von Liebesdrama stehen, ist dieses erste Kapitel ein echter Volltreffer. Elizabeth Fremantle legt einen vielversprechenden Auftakt hin, der Lust auf mehr macht. Von mir gibt’s dafür solide 4 von 5 Sternen – und die Empfehlung, unbedingt weiterzulesen!
